Box Score Golden, Colo.: (By Cassidee Young) The Rangers knew they were up for a battle tonight against the #22 ranked Colorado School of Mines and fell to the Orediggers in five sets.
The first set of the match started slow for the Rangers as they had a series of service errors. With Regis (19-6, 10-4 RMAC) behind, 11-8, freshman middle blocker, Gina Morgan, proved to be an effective attacker in the middle as she helped close the gap, 11-10. After a service error by freshman outside hitter, Jessica Wojcik, the Rangers struggled to side out as they allowed the Orediggers to take a 19-11 lead. Sophomore middle blocker for the Orediggers, Melanie Wannamaker, aggressively attacked from the middle and helped Mines (17-6, 11-3 RMAC) take the first set over the Rangers, 25-16.
With an enthusiastic group of Regis student fans, the Rangers took an early lead over the Orediggers in the second set, 11-7, with tough serving and a more effective offense. The Orediggers made a push and kept the game tight. Junior right side hitter, Caitlin McDonnell played her part as she put down some powerful kills to give the Rangers momentum. The second set would end by McDonnell getting two solo blocks against Mines Junior outside hitter, Jackie Stabell and Regis winning 25-22.
Regis came out strong in the third set of the match as senior outside hitter, Kyndell Highland and senior middle blocker, Lyz Kann contributed to the Ranger offense. The Rangers took a huge lead over the Orediggers, 19-11, after senior Libero Cassidee Young tallied in a service ace. Freshman setter Aubrey Podschweit, ended the game on a risky two handed dump as she left the Orediggers stunned as the third game would end, 25-20.
A slow start for Regis in the fourth set proved to set them back early in the set with the score at 11-7. The Rangers struggled to eliminate their errors and the Orediggers were able to take a huge lead, 22-14. The Regis defense was unable to shut down the aggressive Oredigger offense in the fourth set as this game ended with a score of 25-15.
The final set of tonight's match started off really tight. However, with a score of 5-5, the Rangers struggled to side out and allowed the Orediggers to take a 10-5 lead. McDonnell and Highland were the two main offensive contributions for the Rangers in this set, but Regis could not stay efficient enough to withstand the push of the Orediggers. The final set would end 15-10 in the Orediggers favor.
McDonnell and Wojcik both had a team high 15 kills for the match hitting .244 and .292, respectively. Highland contributed eight kills and Morgan had nine for the Ranger offense. Young had 15 digs for the Rangers and Wojcik added another 13 for the Regis defense.
