No. 9 Regis exacts revenge as they tame UCCS 1-0 on the road

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 9 Regis University Rangers men's soccer team (10-1-1, 7-1-1 RMAC) headed to Colorado Springs to face the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (7-5-1, 6-3 RMAC) on Friday night, in a rematch of their game from one week ago.

In the first match between the two teams, UCCS handed Regis their first loss of 2016 in a seven goal barrage among both teams. The game ended with the Mountain Lions on top 4-3, but the Rangers were looking for revenge on Friday night and that is exactly what they found in a 1-0 victory over the home team.

Sophomore Noah Chapleski connected on a rocket from 20 yards out to give RU a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Chapleski has played more of a playmaking role this season, ranking second on the team with two assists, but his second goal of the season in the 17th minute proved critical in this game.

With a 1-0 lead, Regis looked to hold on and limit the offensive opportunities for the home team. They were able to keep possession and control the tempo for the majority of the game, forcing the opposition into areas of the field that they wanted.

The Rangers defense that had been struggling to find their groove got back on track as they collected their eighth shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson (3-0) picked up his third win of the year making four saves, facing 17 shots, in the match and earning his second shutout of 2016.

RU was outshot 17-4, but each team managed to put four shots on target. Regis also lost the corner kick battle 6-3, but they were victorious in the only category that mattered at the end of the game, scoring the only goal of the match, earning the 1-0 win in regulation.

The No. 9 men's soccer team will return home on Saturday before meeting up with cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver (7-4-1, 5-2-1 RMAC) on Sunday at the home of the Roadrunners.
