No. 12 Regis improves to 9-0 in RMAC play with sweep of Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – On Friday evening, the No. 12 ranked Regis Rangers volleyball team (17-2, 9-0 RMAC) swept the Grizzlies of Adams State University (7-11, 3-6 RMAC) winning the sets 25-18, 28-26 and 25-16.

How It Happened: Regis took over in the first set when they were trailing 5-2, rattling off four-straight points to take a 6-5 lead. Then, with the score tied 7-7, the Rangers went off to score nine of the next ten points for a 16-8 lead that gave RU the momentum to end the set 25-18.

Set two was more tightly contested as the teams battled back and forth to gain control of the crucial set. Regis had set point at 24-23 but a service error gave the Grizzlies another opportunity. Sophomore Kelsey Green connected on a kill to give the Rangers a 27-26 lead and then ASU had an attack error that sealed the second set for the Blue and Gold, needing only one more set to take the match.

The third set was much like the first as RU rattled off a couple runs of three, four points at a time to extend leads. At 12-9, Regis got two kills from Green and a service ace from sophomore Silvia Basso to take a six-point lead 15-9. Right after the Grizzlies got a point to bring the score to 20-15, sophomore Nikki Kennedy unleashed a kill, then she and Green forced an attack error, freshman Caitlyn Burroway got into the action with a kill of her own, and ASU committed a ball-handling error to put the visitors in match point position. A mis-hit from the Grizzlies ended the match, giving the Rangers their ninth conference win of the season.

Match Notes: Burroway led the way with 13 kills on 26 total attempts for a .346 attack percentage. She also recorded 11 digs in the match to complete her double-double. Green added 10 kills and seven digs while Kennedy posted eight kills and three blocks. Junior Kristen Hornung needed only 10 attempts to produce eight kills for a game-high .800 attack percentage to go along with six blocks. Junior Kristina Schell had a team-high 14 digs and one service ace while Basso logged 41 assists and two service aces on the night.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 12 ranked volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow night when they face the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. at 5 p.m.
