Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Rangers earn 1-0 shutout win over Roadrunners, lock down No. 1 seed

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (13-2-2, 11-0-1 RMAC) finished the regular season as the champions of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) regular season with a  1-0 shutout win over the cross-town rival Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (8-9, 7-5 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened: Regis, who finish the regular season unbeaten in conference play, have locked down the No. 1 seed in the RMAC Tournament that is set to begin on October 31. The win came on the road against MSU Denver.

The game remained scoreless in the first half with both teams recording three shots in the first 45 minutes. The Roadrunners put two of them on goal while the Rangers managed only one. However, RU enjoyed a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.

In the beginning of the second half, MSU Denver earned a quick corner kick and then put a header shot towards net that freshman Julia Coombs saved to keep the home team off the scoreboard. Regis responded with two shots but it was the third shot that made the difference.

Freshman Natasha Wehner delivered a cross to the box where senior Rikki Fix was able to slide, scoring a one-touch shot into the left corner of the net. The goal broke the scoreless tie, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.

The goal sparked the RU players who locked down the Roadrunners for the remainder of the game. For the second half in a row, both teams took three shots, but it was Regis who was victorious in the 1-0 win.

Game Notes: Both teams finished with three corner kicks, six shots and three shots on goal in the game. The only difference came on the Fix goal where the keeper had no chance of saving the shot. Fix led the team with three shots, putting two on goal and scoring her fifth goal of the season. Senior Akina Fujimoto also had two shots and junior Annika Hills had one. Wehner tallied her second assist of the season, teaming up with Fix for the game-winner.

Up Next for the Rangers: The women's soccer team has officially earned the No. 1 seed in the RMAC Tournament, finishing with the best record in the conference.  Stay tuned to www.regisrangers.com and all Regis Rangers social media accounts for more details.
