Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Top seeded Rangers blast past Skyhawks 6-1 in quarterfinal match

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 1 seeded Regis University women's soccer team (14-2-2) knocked off the No. 8 seed Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (4-11-1) 6-1 in the quarterfinal round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament.

How It Happened: Five different players netted goals for Regis including sophomore Tori Rinsem who had her first multi-goal game of the season. Fort Lewis came out looking to dethrone the regular season RMAC champions as they drew first blood after only 5:41 had ticked off the clock.

Trailing 1-0, the Rangers knew they needed to step it up if they were to advance to play in the semifinal game. As a play developed along the right side of the RU attacking side, sophomore Sofia Garcia whipped a ball into the box just as Rinsem was cutting across. Rinsem finished her shot to knot the game at one goal apiece in the 12th minute of play.

In the 22nd minute, senior Rikki Fix took a pass from Rinsem and gave the home squad a 2-1 lead with her sixth goal of the season. The first half concluded with Regis on top 2-1, but the Blue and Gold were looking for more.

The second half provided much of that for the Rangers. Senior Akina Fujimoto got things started for RU as she drilled a ball into the left side netting after fellow senior Caelyn Hirschman played a ball to her from a corner kick in the 51st minute. Less than two minutes later, Rinsem was back at it again as she teamed up with Fix for her second goal of the match, and her sixth of the season to take a 4-1 lead.

Freshman Julia Masciarelli scored her first collegiate goal when senior Lizzie Thometz played ball to her as she streaked down the left side of the field, putting Regis ahead by four goals, 5-1, just as the clock hit 60 minutes. The final nail in the coffin came when senior Cate Parchinski drilled an outside of the foot shot past a diving goalkeeper to put the game out of reach. It was a dominating 6-1 win for the Rangers, but they know that the road ahead of them will continue to get increasingly difficult as they approach their goal of an RMAC Tournament Championship and a berth into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Tournament.

Game Notes: Rinsem tallied two goals and one assist to lead the team while four others chipped in with one goal apiece. Fix, Thometz, Garcia, Hirschman, senior Maggie Saras and freshman Sophia Brendle all recorded assists in a match where RU unleashed for 26 shots, 14 of which were put on goal. The defense led by Saras, Hirschman, junior Sydney DeVries, and freshman Kalianna Crosby held the Skyhawks to three shots on goal in four attempts. It was a full team effort as the home side controlled a majority of the possession inside the attacking side of the field.

Up Next for the Rangers: With the win, No. 1 seeded Regis will serve as the host site for the remainder of the RMAC Tournament.  The first semifinal game is scheduled for Friday, November 3 at noon. The second semifinal match will be held at 3 p.m. Regis will face the winner of the match between No. 4 seeded Colorado State University – Pueblo and the No. 5 seed Metropolitan State University of Denver taking place tonight at 6 p.m. in Pueblo, Colo.
