Denver, Colo. – RU Volleyball took care of business Saturday, saddling the RMAC's ninth-ranked Black Hills State Yellow Jackets (6-11, 3-5 RMAC) with their fifth-straight loss. The three-set affair kept the Rangers perfect (8-0) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, advancing the nation's tenth-ranked team to 16-3 on the season.
Â
How It Happened: BHSU looked flashy at moments, but in the end the Yellow Jackets' miscues proved their undoing. Regis benefited from ten BHSU errors in the set – ten free points for the home team – and eventually cruised through the sets final moments on the way to a 25-15 win.
Â
The visitors cleaned things up for the second, challenging the Rangers through the middle of the set. Unfazed, Regis used clever shots and timely blocks to work their way back in – and then rode an eight-point serving-streak from
Kristina Schell to extend a lead the Jackets wouldn't overcome. Schell's attack from the service line rattled the Black Hills' passers and included back-to-back service aces. RU's attack also caused fits, with
Kristen Hornung and
Caitlyn Martinez combining for nine kills and no errors in Regis' flashy .444% set-two attack effort. Â Â
Â
In a last ditch effort to stay alive, the Jackets surged through the opening moments of the night's final set. RU's dominance was evident once again, however, as the Rangers made their turn for home with a six-point run that started with the score notched at eight. Using a lethal attack from
Nikki Kennedy and
Kelsey Green along with another pair of Schell aces, Regis moved ahead 14-8. The Rangers remained in control the rest of the way, as eight late Black Hills State errors sealed the fate of the night.
Â
It was a dominating showing across the board for the Rangers, who bettered BHSU in nearly every category. RU tallied 40 kills compared to 26 from the Jackets, flashed a 7-2 service ace advantage and proved better in the back row with 51-36 dig effort. Regis finished the night with a .304 kill clip.
Â
Next Up For The Rangers:Â The Rangers return to the road next weekend for a pair of RMAC matches against Adams State and Fort Lewis College. Friday night's match in Alamosa begins at 7 pm.
