DENVER, Colo. – The No. 21 ranked Regis University Rangers (9-1-2, 7-0-1 RMAC) cruised to a 6-0 win over the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls (3-6-2, 3-3-1 RMAC). With the win, Regis has now won six-straight, while also extending their unbeaten streak to 11 games.
At 9-2-1, this marks the best record through 12 games for the women's soccer team since the 2005 season in which the team went 13-1 before picking up a second loss.
How It Happened: The Rangers got on the board early when junior
Bethany Hohnstein delivered a rocket pass to sophomore
Tori Rinsem in front of net, who buried her third goal of the season to put the home team ahead 1-0 less than three minutes into the game.
RU continued their dominance through the first half on their way to posting 11 shots and holding the Cowgirls to two, with none of them reaching the goalkeeper.
Regis still held their 1-0 lead as the second half started and they quickly got back to work on the offensive end. Senior
Rikki Fix was driving her way towards goal when she was taken down in the box by one of the NMHU defenders. The Rangers were awarded a penalty kick and senior
Caelyn Hirschman stepped up to take it.
Hirschman drilled the ball into the top left corner of the net for her first goal of the season, giving RU a two-goal lead 2:02 into the second half. The team never stopped pressing forward leading to many offensive opportunities. As the teams were fighting for a loose ball in the Cowgirls defensive zone, Hohnstein won the ball and smoked her shot into the far side of the goal extending the lead to three-goals in the 63
rd minute.
Nine minutes later, Regis found themselves with yet another opportunity deep in their offensive territory. Senior
Akina Fujimoto sent a right-footed blast into the goal for her second of the year. A second penalty kick in the 77
th minute, this time taken by sophomore
Emily Ramos, gave the Blue and Gold a 5-0 lead. The final nail in the coffin came with one second on the clock when a deflected ball from a NMHU defender trickled out to freshman
Sophia Brendle who laced the ball off the post and into the net for her first collegiate goal. The goal came with one second on the clock, giving the home team the 6-0 win.
Game Notes: The Rangers put 14 of their 24 shots on goal, led by Rinsem who took four, followed by Ramos, Parchinski and Fujimoto who each had three shots in the game. The defense, led by seniors
Maggie Saras, Hirschman and junior
Sydney DeVries held the opposition to only six shots of which only one reached the target. Freshman
Julia Coombs faced all six shots in the game, making one save on the way to earning her eighth shutout of the season.
