DENVER, Colo. – A career-night by freshman
Whitney Jacob helped the Regis University women's basketball team (1-4) to their first win of the season with a 61-50 victory over East Central University (1-3) on Saturday afternoon. Jacob grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and totaled three blocked, also a career-high.
How it Happened: The Rangers opened the game on a 4-0 run and never surrendered the lead. Seniors
Mary Sigler and
Chante Church each knocked down a three-pointer in the first quarter to open the lead to 18-13 going into the second quarter.
A layup by the Tigers tied the game at 21 with five minutes remaining in the first half but Regis answered back with a 6-0 run of their own. The Rangers scored only 12 points in the second quarter and still held a 30-26 halftime advantage.
RU came out of the break and allowed the Tigers to pull within one before going on another run to stretch their lead to 11. Sigler scored nine of Regis'18 third quarter points.
The Rangers maintained their lead through the fourth quarter and didn't allow the tigers to get closer than seven. RU lead by as many as 13 when senior
Majestie Robinson made a layup with five minutes left in the game. Regis made 5-of-5 free-throws in the final two minutes to close the game 61-50.
Game Notes: The Rangers shot 31 percent from the field and 24 percent from three-point range. Robinson and Sigler each had a team high 14 points. Sophomore
Jaz'Myne Snipes scored eight points while shooting 4-for-4 from the field.
Jacob's 17 rebounds, three offensive and 14 defensive, helped Regis to a total of 53 rebounds. They out-rebounded the Tigers 53-26. Junior
Shelby Espinosa snagged 12 boards.
