DENVER, Colo. – The winning streak finally came to an end for the Regis University men's basketball team (6-1, 1-1 RMAC) after the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (8-0, 2-0 RMAC) used a big second half to comeback and steal the game 69-58.
How it Happened: Regis was without senior
Ty McGee for this game who left last night's contest with an ankle injury, which took one starter out of the rotation before the game even started. The Rangers responded with composure as they jumped out to a four-point lead on a layup from senior
Roberto Reyes after 2:58 of play.
With just under 13 minutes to go in the opening half, sophomore
Christian Little scored to put RU ahead 14-8. The largest lead of the half came on a layup from senior
Dexter Sienko who put Regis ahead by nine points, 33-24 with 40 seconds remaining in the half. Mines got the last bucket of the period and the teams broke for halftime with the Rangers in front 33-26.
The second half followed a much different storyline as the Orediggers began their journey on the comeback trail. The visitors took a two-point lead at the 15:51 mark and extending it to as many as five when the score reached 49-44. RU got back I the groove and junior
Jarrett Brodbeck splashed a shot from deep to put the home squad back in front 50-49 minutes later.
Mines quickly got the lead back and then kept their foot on the pedal, stretching the lead out to nine points by the time the clock reached the 2:25 mark. The Orediggers converted on their free-throws down the stretch, putting the game out of reach, eventually finishing with a 69-58 win.
Game Notes: The team went a putrid 0-for-8 from distance in the opening half, and they finished with a 3-of-18 mark from beyond the arc. Additionally, the rebounding margin tilted heavily in favor of the visitors who outrebounded Regis 36-24 in the game. Brodbeck and Little each scored 16 points to lead the team, but the defense allowed Luke Schroepfer to go off for 28 points, including a barrage of three's late in the game.
Up Next for the Rangers: After opening the season with seven-straight home games, the men's basketball team will hit the road for their next six games, not returning to the Regis Fieldhouse until January 5.
