DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team fell to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after giving up 33 fourth quarter points to Colorado School of Mines (5-3, 2-0) on Sunday afternoon. Regis saw their double-digit second half lead slip away as they lost 82-74.
How it Happened: Orediggers junior Emily Bailey was too much for the Rangers defense to handle. She opened the game with a three-pointer and went on to score 28 total points. RU dug themselves into a deep hole and found themselves down by nine (18-9) just halfway through the first period. Four consecutive points with under a minute left in the first quarter helped Regis gain some momentum.
The Rangers continued their scoring streak by opening the second quarter with back-to-back three-pointers by seniors
Mary Sigler and
Chante Church to take their first lead of the game, 19-18. RU went on another 8-0 run in the second quarter fueled by two more three-pointers by Sigler and freshman
Emma Sterkel.
Regis scored 23 second quarter points with seven made baskets from beyond the three-point line. They went into the locker room with a 36-29 advantage.
The Rangers lead by as many as 12 with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter, but were unable to get key defensive stops in the fourth to close out the game.
The Orediggers went on a 9-0 run of their own to regain the lead with five minutes left in regulation. Emily scored 13 of Mines 28 fourth quarter points.
RU shot just 5-of-18 from the field in the fourth quarter.
Game Notes: The Rangers had two players score 20-plus points. Sigler led Regis with 28 total points as she went 8-for-22 from the field and Junior
Majestie Robinson went 8-of-17 from the field to contribute 21 total points. Robinson also dished six assists.
As a team, they shot 36.1 percent from the field and made 12-of-15 three pointers (80 percent).
Both teams scored 30 points in the paint. The Rangers scored 12 points off turnovers, compared to Mines' 9.
