DURANGO, Colo. – The Regis University softball team opened day one of action with a split against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (2-21, 1-13 RMAC). The Rangers scored a pair of late runs in the first game to defeat the Skyhawks 2-1 but fell 9-2 in the second leaving 17 runners on base.
Regis was led by
Lauren Hernandez who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run, two RBIs and three walks. Hernandez had a double and a home run on the day.
How It Happened | Game 1: Five scoreless innings of softball were played before the silence was broken in the top of the sixth. On two outs,
Delaney McGinn reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and moved to second on a stolen base.
Logan Losh singled to right field to score McGinn and give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
In the lead-off at bat of the seventh, Hernandez homered as RU held a 2-0 lead. Fort Lewis matched that home run with one of their own in the bottom of the seventh to come within one but Losh retired the next three batters to lift Regis to the victory.
Game Notes: Losh improves to an overall mark of 12-5 while having tallied two strikeouts. Both teams had four hits apiece. RU left four runners on base to FLC's two. Hernandez went 1-for-1 at the plate with two walks to lead the Rangers.
How It Happened | Game 2: The Rangers brought one across in the top half of the first inning as Losh recorded the sacrifice fly that scored
Emily John who led-off with a walk. The Skyhawks matched the score in the bottom of the first to even things back up at 1-1.
Fort Lewis continued with offensive consistency putting two more on the board in the second and one in the third to hold a 6-1 lead over the Rangers. In the top of the sixth, McGinn doubled down the left field line on one out in the top of the sixth. Hernandez tallied the RBI that scored McGinn with a single to left field.
Regis was finding consistency of their own at the plate but unable to convert runs. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 9-2 in the bottom half of the sixth with a pair of home runs, one a two-run shot. RU could not gain any offensive momentum in the last inning to fall in the second game.
Game Notes: The Rangers left 17 runners stranded on base with four instances of bases loaded. RU earned 11 walks led by John with three as they were slightly outhit RU 9-7. Hernandez led throughout the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a walk and an RBI.
