DURANGO, Colo. – The Regis University softball closed out the final day of doubleheader action with the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (3-22, 2-14 RMAC) with another split. The Rangers bats were swinging in the first game as they turned an 8-3 result over the Skyhawks but could not mount a late-game comeback falling 5-3 in game two.
Alyssa Finger and
Delaney McGinn led the Rangers offensively throughout the day. Finger went 4-for-6 in the box with three runs and three RBIs while recording Regis' only home run of the day.
Delaney McGinn also went 4-for-6 with one run and two walks.
How It Happened | Game 1: The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. On two outs,
Lauren Hernandez earned a walk and advanced to second on a single to left from
Melissa Heronema. A second walk of the inning loaded the bases and a third walk by
Macy Cox put RU on the board.
Cox drew another walk in the top of the fourth that loaded the bases again.
Emily John recorded the RBI on a sacrifice fly to center that gave Regis a 2-0 lead.
Bradey King made it a 4-0 lead when she singled to center field scoring runners on second and third.
The Skyhawks were held scoreless until the bottom half of the fourth when they put two on the board. The Rangers quickly responded in the top of the fifth with another three runs as two singles and a double from Hernandez forced Fort Lewis to a pitching change. After the change, Cox drove home Heronema on a single to left field giving RU a 7-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh, on two outs again, the Rangers capitalized on a single from Losh down the right field line that scored pinch runner
Laura Scheffel. Regis had pushed the lead to far out in front of the Skyhawks as they move ahead in the series 2-1.
Game Notes: Hernandez was the Rangers most consistent batter in yesterday's doubleheader and that proved true again going 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Finger added a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with one run, an RBI and a walk. Cox went 1-for-2 drawing two walks, scoring one run and notching two RBIs. King also tallied two RBIs on the game. The Rangers outhit the Skyhawks 11-3. Losh pitched through all seven innings to earn her 13
th win of the season. She struck out four batters and gave up just two earned runs on three hits.
How It Happened | Game 2: The Rangers fell behind early as FLC went ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the third on a series of three-straight hits. In the top of the fourth, RU got on the board with a two-run home run over left field from Finger.
With help from three Fort Lewis walks in the top of the fifth, Regis sat in a position to take over the lead with bases loaded. RU was unable to convert as they remained down 3-2. Fort Lewis flipped the script and loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fifth. John made a diving catch in right field to get the Rangers out of the inning.
King brought the tying run across the plate in the top of the sixth reaching on a fielder's choice. RU did not hold the lead for long as back-to-back Skyhawk hits in the bottom of the sixth pushed it back in favor of the home team 5-3.
With one final attempt in the seventh inning, on two outs, Hernandez drew a walk but the Rangers comeback fell short.
Game Notes: Regis' second game of the day today was similar to that of the second game yesterday leaving ten runners stranded. The Skyhawks outhit the Rangers 10-6.
Delaney McGinn went 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks and Finger went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Hernandez earned three walks. Losh and
Taylor Armitage shared time on the mound for RU each pitching in three innings.
Next Up For The Rangers: Regis remains on the road for a four-game series against the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26. Doubleheader action is set to start at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
