LAKEWOOD, Colo. – For the second weekend in a row, the Regis University baseball team (15-7, 9-3 RMAC) swept a four-game conference series. This time it came against the Colorado Christian University Cougars (6-16, 0-8 RMAC) who have now fallen victim to two-straight conference sweeps.
The series sweep extends Regis' win streak to eight-straight games, the longest such streak since the 2004 season in which the Rangers won 13-straight, on their way to a third place finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings.
How it Happened: Making the move from the bullpen to the starting rotation for RU today was senior
Adam Montano (W, 3-1) who diced his way to his third win of the season. The righty hurled six fantastic innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits, allowing only one walk, and striking out five batters on the day.
After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Regis offense picked up behind Montano. Junior Garret Skillings (1-3, HR, RBI) sent a dinger over the right field fence for the Rangers' first run of the game. Junior
Andrew Bryniarski (2-4, 2 RBI) singled to left field in the top of the fourth bringing senior
Josh Newell (2-3, RBI) in to tie the game at two runs apiece.
Bryniarski was back at it again in the top of the sixth, sending a single to right field scoring Newell on the play once again, giving RU their first lead of the day 3-2. A bases loaded walk to sophomore
Logan Heflebower (0-2, RBI) allowed junior
Christian Bitar (0-4) to jog home extending the lead to 4-2 in favor of the visitors. Regis added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but they did not need it as junior
Patrick Kenny came on in the bottom of the seventh allowing only two hits, and closing the 5-2 victory out for the Rangers.
Game Notes: Three players combined for five hits in the game, led by Newell and Bryniarski who each tallied two hits apiece. Four batters reached base by means of hit by pitch, and the defense made two errors. RU finishes the series with 58 runs scored and allowing only 21 defensively.
