DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team earned a split in day one doubleheader action against cross-town rivals the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (27-10, 19-3 RMAC). The Rangers controlled both sides of the ball handing the Roadrunners just their third conference loss 6-2 in the first game but fell in the second game 11-3.
Lauren Hernandez continues to remain consistent in the box for the Rangers leading on the day going 3-for-5. Hernandez also tallied one run and an RBI while earning one walk.
Delaney McGinn added a 3-for-6 performance at the plate with three runs.
How It Happened | Game 1: Hernandez gave the Rangers an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first recording a sacrifice hit that scored
Emily John who reached on a single through the left side.
Logan Losh was a powerhouse on the mound retiring the Roadrunners quickly and efficiently to hold the visitors scoreless through four innings.
The Rangers exploded offensively in the bottom of the fourth when
Melissa Heronema and
Macy Cox notched back-to-back singles, each tallying an RBI, all while forcing an MSU Denver pitching change.
Bradey King gave RU a 4-0 lead on a single through the right side that scored Heronema.
Losh held the Roadrunners without a hit until the top of the fifth as they brought two across the plate continuing to trail 4-2. The Rangers sealed the opening game victory with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Game Notes: Regis outhit MSU Denver 10-4 while leaving seven runners on base to the visitors four. McGinn went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs while King and John both went 2-for-4. Losh notched a career-high ten strikeouts, five of which looking, while giving up just four hits and two earned runs. Losh improves to an overall record of 16-6.
Carlie Sexton recorded her 46
th career double, putting her just four away from breaking the all-time record.
How It Happened | Game 2: The Roadrunners were the first to strike this time going up 1-0 in the opening inning and again in the fifth. MSU Denver extended their lead to 4-0 with a double and a single in the top of the fifth.
Losh broke the silence for the Rangers bringing McGinn across the plate who reached on a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the fifth. A lead-off home run for the Roadrunners in the top of the seventh led to a Regis pitching change and an 11-1 lead.
Alyssa Finger attempted to give RU life in the bottom of the seventh hitting her third home run of the season. Unfortunately, the Rangers could not gain momentum from Finger's no out two-RBI homerun as they move to an overall record of 20-18 and 12-10 in the conference.
Game Notes: Regis was outhit 14-9 and left six runners stranded. Finger and Hernandez each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Finger recorded a double, a homerun, one run and two RBIs.
Taylor Armitage recorded the start on the mound for RU notching four strikeouts.
