DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball faltered in the opening two non-conference games against the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers (27-18). The offensive bats and strong defense of the Hilltoppers were too much to handle for the Rangers falling 12-3 and 17-1.
Â
How It Happened | Game 1:Â St. Edward's started the game off bringing four across in the opening at bat to lead 4-0 early on Regis. Another two in the top of the second from the visitors gave them a 6-0 lead but RU broke the silence in the home half of that inning.
Â
Andrew Bryniarski hit a lead-off double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bryniarski came across the plate on a
Garrett Skillings single through the left side. With bases loaded on no outs,
Ryan Tierney drew a walk to score Skillings. On the next at bat, the Hilltoppers turned a double play but
Geordy Smith managed to score in the process to bring the Rangers within three, 6-3.
Â
However, those would be the only runs of the game for Regis as the home team was unable to slow down a powerful St. Edward's squad.
Â
Game Notes:Â The Rangers were outhit 13-6 leaving six runners on base.
Logan Heflebower led RU going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Noah Gotsis earned the start on the mound but suffered the loss moving him to an overall record of 6-3. Three different Rangers notched RBIs:
Max Fabricant, Skillings and Tierney.
Â
How It Happened | Game 2:Â St. Edward's jumped out to another early 4-0 lead after two innings of play. RU was held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Tierney scored the only run of the game.
Â
Regis was unable to slow down the Hilltoppers again as the visitors put up big numbers in the top of the third and fifth that could not be matched.
Â
Game Notes: The Rangers were outhit 21-3 as the efficient St. Edward's offense left nine runners on base.
Matt Heibult suffered the loss moving to an overall record of 4-5.
