GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In the opening game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, the No. 6 seeded Regis University baseball team suffered an 8-3 loss to the top-seeded Colorado Mesa Mavericks. The loss drops the Rangers into the loser's bracket where they will face No. 5 UC-Colorado Springs.
How It Happened: Andrew Bryniarski gave the Rangers a slight 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Bryniarski blasted a solo shot over the left field fence to notch his 10
th home run on the year.
The Mavericks matched Regis' run with a home run of their own in the home half of the second locking the score up at one a piece. Colorado Mesa brought one more across in the bottom of the third on a single up the middle to lead 2-1.
The lead exchanged hands again on a two-RBI home run from
Ryan Tierney in the top of the fifth giving RU a 3-2 advantage. CMU evened the score for the second time of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-single to right field.
With the score tied up at 3-3, Regis made a pitching change going to
Patrick Kenny with one out in the sixth. On two outs, the Mavericks put the lead in their favor with a triple to left center that scored runners on second and third while bringing one more across in the next at bat to lead 6-3.
Adam Montano came to the mound for RU with no outs in the bottom of the seventh just after CMU pushed the lead to 7-3.
Chris Kobar caught a runner attempting to steal and Montano struck out two batters to get Regis out of the inning but not without Colorado Mesa bringing one more across to lead 8-3.
The Rangers struggled to get things rolling on the offensive side of the ball falling in the opening game of the tournament.
Game Notes: The Mavericks outhit the Rangers 11-7. Bryniarski led Regis going 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and an RBI. Tierney finished the game with two RBIs from his home run in the fifth.
Noah Gotsis suffered the loss pitching in 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs and tallying five strikeouts while moving to an overall mark of 6-5. RU left four runners on base, two of which were in the sixth.
