Baseball falls short, season comes to an end

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team fell short in an elimination game against the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. Capturing the most wins since 2013, the 2017 season ended on the 7-5 loss to the Roadrunners.

How It Happened: Max Fabricant blasted a triple to left field in the leadoff at bat and came across on the very next at bat on a single to center from Josh Newell. The Rangers held an early 1-0 lead after the first half inning but the Roadrunners brought two across in the home half to turn the lead in their favor, 2-1.

In the top of the second, on two outs, Ryan Tierney game RU a 4-2 lead with a three-RBI home run to left field. MSU Denver matched the Regis' runs hitting a three-run home run of their own over left field in the bottom of the second to take back a 5-4 lead.

Two scoreless innings followed for both squads as the Roadrunners extended their lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth. The Rangers would come within one, 6-5, in the top of the sixth as Tierney stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error to come all the way around on a fielding error.

MSU Denver brought the final run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth as Regis left bases loaded in the eighth and two on in the ninth to come up short.

Game Notes: Both teams finished with nine hits apiece as the Rangers left 12 runners stranded throughout the game. Tierney went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk while tallying two runs and three RBIs. Fabricant added a 2-for-5 performance, including a double and a triple, with one run. Chris Quackenbush earned his 14th start on the season suffering the loss on the mound for the Rangers.
