Regis opens RMAC play on high note

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 21 Regis University volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of conference play with the 3-1 win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (4-6, 1-1 RMAC).

The Rangers improve to an overall mark of 10-1, the best start since 1998, and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

How It Happened: The score sat tied at 12-12 in the first set when the Rangers went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. The Mountain Lions attempted to battle but Regis never looked back earning the 25-19 first set win.

Play throughout the second set was similar to that of the first. RU held the lead throughout the entirety of the set but UCCS remained within distance. Four-straight points from the Rangers gave them a 20-14 lead which led to a 25-22 second set win.

The Mountain Lions found their rhythm in the third set as Regis could seem to break the visitors stride. RU held set point at 26-25 but UCCS turned it around to extend the match with the 28-26 win.

Two separate four-point spurts at the beginning of the fourth gave the Rangers a 4-1 lead and then a 10-4 lead. RU's dominance continued to a 20-10 lead and then finally to a 25-19 win.

Match Notes: Regis was slightly edged out in kills 58-57 but once again prove more efficient with a .289 attack percentage to .179. RU's defense at the net gave the Mountain Lions some problems recording 12 blocks led by Kristen Hornung with seven, two of which were solo. Nikki Kennedy added five blocks of her own with two solo as well. Kennedy led the Rangers offensively with 14 kills and a .393 attack percentage. Hornung and Caitlyn Burroway chipped in with 13 kills of their own; Hornung with a .550 attack percentage. Kelsey Green tallied four service aces while Drew Rhamy led in digs with 12. Silvia Basso assisted on 51 points.

Next Up For The Rangers: Regis heads out on a five-game road stand beginning with Colorado Mesa (8-2, 2-0 RMAC) on Friday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
