DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Rangers (3-1-2, 1-0-1 RMAC) tied the No. 18 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (4-1-1, 1-0-1 RMAC) by a score of 1-1 after a lightning delay that consequently ended the game with 6:03 to go in the second half.
How It Happened: The match carried a very fast pace throughout as both teams ran around looking for offensive opportunities. It was the Orediggers who capitalized on an opportunity first as they took a 1-0 lead after only 6:18 of play.
Although Regis had more shooting opportunities, they had a difficult time freeing themselves of defenders. This changed when freshman
Natasha Wehner sent a pass to senior
Akina Fujimoto who blasted a laser shot from almost 30 yards out to beat the keeper in the top left corner of the goal. The score remained deadlocked at one goal apiece after 45 minutes.
The second half saw the teams settle down a little bit, knocking the ball around into space and challenging many offensive chances. As the game clock ticked down, the weather started to pick up and with 6:03 on the clock the game was suspended and consequently canceled due to lightning.
Game Notes: The Rangers outshot their opponents 13-7, putting seven of their shots on goal to only three for CSM. The Blue and Gold dominated the corner kick battle 6-0 on the day. Senior Cate Parchinski led the team with three shots, putting two on frame. Fujimoto and senior defender
Maggie Saras followed with two shots apiece.
Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Coombs (3-1-2) picked up one save in the match while her counterpart was forced to make six saves on 13 shots faced.
Up Next for the Rangers: The women's soccer team will hit the road for their next three contests against Fort Lewis College (Friday, September 22), Adams State University (Sunday, September 24), and Colorado Mesa University (Friday, September 29).
