Game Recap: Volleyball |

Winners of their last 12 sets, Haugh and the Rangers defeat Mountain Lions in three

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Riding a three-game win streak that has featured nine-straight set wins, the Regis University volleyball team (14-7, 10-2 RMAC) continued the streak with a three-set win against the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (9-11, 7-5 RMAC) on Friday evening.

How It Happened: The opening set started with a huge 6-0 run from Regis that featured three-straight service aces from senior Gabby Haugh. Sophomore Caitlyn Burroway and junior Izzy Gosar added one kill apiece during the run that forced UCCS to call an early timeout. The Rangers never looked back in set one as they cruised to a huge 25-11 win in the opening set.

In the second set, the Mountain Lions put up a fight, battling back-and-forth with RU as the two teams traded point throughout. Regis held three-point advantages on many different occasions throughout set two, but even with a 20-17 lead, UCCS clawed their way back, eventually taking a 22-21 lead late in the set. Kills from Gosar and Burroway, along with a Mountain Lion error set the Rangers up with set-point 24-22. Burroway put the set away with a roll-shot kill, giving the visiting team a 2-0 set lead heading into the third set.

Winner of their last 11 sets, RU was looking to make it an even 12 with a win in the third set. The team would not disappoint as they fought back from an early 3-1 hole to find themselves ahead 17-11 at a later stage of the set. The Mountain Lions cut the lead to three, 19-16, but Regis was too much for the home side as they closed out set three 25-18 for their fourth-straight conference sweep, and 12th set win in a row.

Game Notes: As a team, the Rangers put together a solid effort including a .260 attack percentage, nine service aces, four total blocks and 43 digs. Burroway led both teams with a game-high 14 kills, adding seven digs and one service ace to her stat line. Junior Nikki Kennedy posted eight kills and a game-high .467 attack percentage, adding two blocks on the night. Junior setter Silvia Basso finished the match with 35 assists, good enough for a 11.67 assists per set average. Senior libero Kristina Schell led both squads with 13 digs but it was Haugh who had a career-night from the service line, posting the second-most aces in a three-set match in Regis history (6). This set a new career-high for aces in a match for Haugh who also registered nine digs in the match.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University volleyball team will return to the court tomorrow night as they take on the No. 21 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in Golden, Colo. at 5 p.m.
