GOLDEN, Colo. – The streak of consecutive set wins in a row came to an end on Saturday night for the Regis University volleyball team (14-8, 10-3 RMAC) as they fell to the No. 21 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (18-3, 12-1 RMAC) 3-1.
How It Happened: The opening set was a battle between two conference powerhouses. The set could have gone either way, but in the end the Orediggers found a way to close the first set with a 25-23 win.
The second set featured a great attack percentage from Regis (.357) to only (.255) for Mines, but the end result was the same as the opening set with the home team winning 25-19.
Trailing two sets to zero, the Rangers needed a win in set three to avoid a three-set sweep at the hands of the top-ranked Orediggers. Another set that could have gone either way ended up in RU's favor this time, 25-23. In the set, Regis had three service aces and two blocks to go along with a solid .306 attack percentage. The win kept the Rangers in it, but they still had a big hill to climb to get back onto the match.
The fourth and final set is one that RU wishes they could get back. The team combined to hit only .032 in the fourth set, which did not set them up for success. On top of that, Mines unleashed for their highest attack percentage of the night (.444) as well. The home team powered their way to a 25-13 win in set four, giving them a 3-1 match win.
Game Notes: Things could have gone better for Regis, but there were some highlights here and there. Juniors
Nikki Kennedy and
Izzy Gosar each had 11 kills on the night, but they were the only Rangers in double-digits for kills. Junior setter
Silvia Basso finished the night with five kills, the second-most she has recorded in a single game this season, adding 35 assists in the match as well. Senior
Kristina Schell and sophomore
Caitlyn Burroway led the way in back-row defense with 14 and 13 digs respectively. Kennedy was on fire at the net as she blocked eight total shots from the Orediggers high-powered offense.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis Volleyball team will look to get back on track next weekend when they welcome the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers and the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets to the Regis Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday night.
