DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team (17-8, 13-3 RMAC) faced off with their cross-town rivals, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (15-8, 11-4 RMAC), in a mid-week battle Tuesday night. Regis out-muscled MSU Denver, earning their third-straight sweep over a conference opponent with 25-15, 25-21 and 29-27 set wins.
How It Happened: The highlights of the night came from the third set, but prior to that the Rangers had full control of the match. In the first and second sets, RU held the Roadrunners to .037 and .048 hitting percentages while they swung over .217 in both, hitting .217 in set one and .219 in set two.
The third set provided all of the drama, and some really great back-and-forth volleyball from both teams. The lead changed hands so many times over the course of the third set that neither team was willing to let the other get to far out in front. MSU Denver managed to snag a four-point lead towards the middle part of the set, 10-6. Just when it looked like the Roadrunners would start to run away, Regis stormed back to tie the game at 17 points apiece. The battle continued.
With a 23-21 lead, the Rangers had a critical service error that put the Roadrunners right back into the match. A few points later the game was tied at 25, and the set turned into a win-by-two situation. RU had match point at 26-25, and MSU Denver had match point at 27-26, but it was Regis who put together three-straight points to tie the game at 27, take the lead at 28, and then closed out the match with a 29-27 win.
Game Notes: The win marked the third-straight sweep for the Rangers, who recorded their 17
th win of the season, providing a little separation between themselves and the Roadrunners when it comes to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings. Sophomore
Caitlyn Burroway led all players with 16 kills on the night, adding 12 digs for her double-double and posting a .314 attack percentage in the effort. Junior
Kelsey Green recorded 12 kills as the only other RU player with double-digit kills. Seniors
Kristina Schell (18) and
Gabby Haugh (14) combined for 32 digs. Junior setter
Silvia Basso accounted for 33 of the team's 39 assists as Regis finished with a .229 attack percentage on the night.
Up Next for the Rangers: The volleyball team will hit the road this weekend to take on the Westminster College Griffins this Friday night at 6 p.m. MST before heading to Dixie State for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Trailblazers on Saturday.
