DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (8-5-3, 7-4-1 RMAC) collected an important three points for conference standings with a 2-1 overtime win over Metropolitan State University of Denver (9-6-1, 7-5-0 RMAC) on Thursday afternoon.
How it Happened: The game got off to a slow start as the first shot-on-goal came off the foot of junior
Kat Seebeck in the 14
thminute. Three minutes later, senior
Cat Devitt got the next look at goal but like Seebeck, her shot was saved.
Sophomore
Julia Coombs was forced to make her first save in the 20
thminute. The Roarunners kept their attacking pressure as they placed another shot-on-goal in the 21
stminute, but it was also saved by Coombs.
Freshman
Gia Lemley did not take much time to make her presence known after subbing into the match in the 27
thminute. She had a look at goal in the 30
thminute but was unable to get a shot off due to an aggressive Roadrunner defender on her back. Despite the high-pressure, Lemley maintained possession long enough for junior
Tori Rinsem to find the open space behind her. With a cheeky back-heel, Lemley found Rinsem who broke the threshold with a shot into the left side-netting, putting Regis up 1-0.
The lead held throughout the first-half and well into the second half. MSU Denver created four attacking chances early in the second half, but Coombs stood tall. She saved both shots on goal and watched one bounce wide after hitting the post.
The Roadrunners evened the score at one with a goal of their own in the 78
thminute. Neither team recorded a shot in the final five minutes of regulation and the game was sent into overtime to decide the match.
The first shot of the overtime period ended the game, 2-1, in the Rangers favor. At the 93:41 mark, sophomore
Natasha Wehner scored the golden goal, her second game-winning goal of the season. From her own defensive third of the field, sophomore
Keegan Storlie, played a through-ball over the top. The ball took a high bounce just outside the eighteen forcing the Roadrunners goalie off here line. Wehner and the keeper got to the ball at the same time but Wehner was able to send a chip into the goal, lifting RU to a 2-1 victory.
Game Notes: Both teams placed eight shots on goal. Regis tallied 20 total shots and MSU Denver totaled 15. Wehner had a team-high two shots-on-goal. She and Rinsem accounted for the goals as Lemley and Storlie got the assists.
Coombs had seven saved in 93:41 between the posts.
Each team had three corner-kick opportunites.
