DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (10-6-3, 9-3-2 RMAC) suffered a tough loss this afternoon as they fell 5-3 to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (10-5-3, 8-4-2 RMAC) in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference quarterfinal round.
How it Happened: The Rangers pulled ahead to start the game, netting their first goal in just the third minute of play as
Porter Milner served a through ball up the middle to
Joe Mansfield who finished in the bottom left frame.
Their lead quickly evaporated, however, as the Mountain Lions found the back of the net three consecutive times on three shots on goal within a 10-minute time frame to take the 3-1 advantage. The Rangers struggled to get back into an offensive groove and finished the period taking only one more shot.
Both teams took turns cashing in goals in the second half with UCCS striking first in the 54th minute. Regis quickly answered with their second goal at the 60:02-minute mark by the head of
Kristian Hooker, assisted by
John Halter, to make the score 4-2.
The Mountain Lions added a fifth goal before Mansfield tapped in his second goal of the match in the 77th minute off a cross in the box from
Freddie Swales. Desperately trying to earn their spot in the semifinals, RU took eight shots in the remaining 12 minutes but were unable to convert, falling 5-3.
Game Notes: As a team, the Rangers doubled UCCS in shots, taking 24 but the Mountain Lions would win in accuracy, recording five goals on five shots on goal. Regis beat out UCCS by a margin of 5-to-3 in corner kicks. Mansfield took a team-high three shots on goal to record two goals while Hooker finished with two shots on goal and a goal. Swales, Halter and Milner all added assists.
Up Next for the Rangers: This match concludes the Rangers' 2018 season. While the team is unable to proceed further into the tournament, they do return a host of young talent and will look to build on the success they had this season.
