DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (6-3-2, 5-2 RMAC) made easy work of New Mexico Highlands University (0-9, 0-6 RMAC), topping the Cowgirls 3-1 on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened: The Rangers fell behind early, conceding a goal in the fifth minute of play as a NMHU forward took advantage of a misplayed ball out of the back from RU. Nitza Rodriguez intercepted the pass and chipped the ball into the back of the net, giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 advantage.
Regis answered back just seven minutes later, knotting the score 1-1. Junior
Emily Ramos recorded her seventh assist of the season when senior
Cat Devitt scored a header off her cross.
Another ball found its way into the goal in the 33
rdminute. Junior
Tori Rinsem served in a corner-kick, connecting with freshman
Mya Pfenning who finished her header from the back-post. Her first-career goal gave the Rangers a 2-1 advantage.
Freshman
Gia Lemley also recorded her first-career goal in the 3-1 win. Lemley found open space in the middle of the box, providing Rinsem with a passing option. From the end-line, Rinsem slotted the ball to Lemley who finished with her first touch.
Game Notes: RU totaled 21 shots, placing 11 on target. Lemley led Regis with five shot-attempts, placing two on frame and scoring one. Nine other Rangers got a look at goal. Lemley and Pfenning each got their first-career goal and Devitt recorded her fourth of the season.
Rinsem accounted for two assists and Ramos added one. RU held the corner-kick advantage, 6-2.
Coombs recorded three saves.
