LUBBOCK, Texas – The Regis University men's basketball team couldn't hold on this afternoon as they were narrowly edged 63-58 by Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas.
How it Happened: The Rangers and Chaparrals were neck-in-neck the entire contest, finishing the first half dead even at 25 points apiece.
Brian Dawson had the hot hand for the Rangers in the first period, scoring all 14 of his points, including a trio of threes. Regis was able to take a six-point advantage on two separate occasions, the latter coming with just over six minutes remaining on the clock.
Lubbock slowly chipped away at the lead with a three-pointer followed by three consecutive buckets. They eventually equalized with 1:47 left on the clock. As time ticked away, both teams earned another basket to remain tied at the half.
Coming out of the locker rooms, the Rangers went on a 7-0 run behind a
Ryan Beisty layup and
Jarrett Brodbeck's fastbreak layup and 3-point play in the paint.
The Chaparrals continued to persist despite falling into an 11-point deficit. Over a seven-minute stretch late in the half, Lubbock strung together a 20-4 run that gave them the lead. Regis, unable to overcome the disadvantage, went on to fall 63-58.
Game Notes: The Rangers were led by Dawson with 14 points and four rebounds. Brodbeck chipped in 12 points while
Christian Little recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as well as a team-best five assists.
Regis shot 36.7 percent from the floor and 23.1 percent in 3-point land while going 8-for-13 from the charity stripe. Lubbock took advantage of points off turnovers, doubling the Rangers seven to total 14. They also capitalized on second chance points, finishing with six compared to RU's three.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis returns to the court next Saturday for their home opener against Stanislaus State. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
