DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (3-2) defeated the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers (1-3) 77-60 inside Regis Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
How It Happened: The Opening points of the contest were scored by NWOSU. They took an early 3-0 lead with a made free-throw and a two-point jumper. Regis tied the score at three with points in the same fashion.
Senior
Jarrett Brodbeck and junior
Taffy Tela drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give the Rangers a 13-7 edge. RU led by as many as nine, 24-15, when senior
Ryan Beisty hit a long-range shot of his own with eight minutes remaining in the opening half.
NWOSU chipped away in the waning moments of the half, reclaiming the advantage 29-28 as the halftime buzzer sounded. They outscored RU 10-3 in the last five minutes of the period.
The teams came out of the break exchanging buckets, but it was Regis that began to pull away following two three-pointers from Brodbeck and Beisty. A layup by junior
Christian Little gave the Rangers a 41-39 lead with 14:34 left to play.
Freshman
Toni Rocak scored six straight points to create separation in the score-line. A 9-0 run fueled by sophomore
Brian Dawson stretched the RU advantage to 69-57 with four minutes on the clock. Regis closed the game out with an 8-0 run in the last three minutes to secure the 77-60 victory.
Game Notes: Little (7-10 FG, 0-2 3PT) led all scorers with 17 points. Brodbeck (5-10 FG, 4-5 3PT) sank four-of-five from downtown and totaled 14 points. Beisty was the third Ranger to contribute double digits. He scored 13 points on four-of-eight shooting and three three-pointers.
Rocak led with six rebounds, four of which were offensive. RU out-rebounded NWOSU 32-27.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's basketball team will begin conference play with an away game in Lakewood, Colorado on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. against Colorado Christian University.
