DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team (13-9, 12-5 RMAC) lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Spring for just two minutes in regulation, but double-double performances by junior
Shelby Espinosa and sophomore
Jaz'Myne Snipes helped them pull out the win in overtime, 73-69.
How It Happened: Regis' largest lead of regulation was 7-4 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Rangers found themselves trailing 20-12 after one quarter. They committed four turnovers and went 0-for-2, giving up a 10-0 run to end the first.
RU never pulled within eight and trailed by as many as 13 (27-14) in the second quarter. Regis made just five baskets in the last 10 minutes of the half and went into the locker room with a 34-25 deficit.
Senior
Chante Church made the first bucket of the third quarter, sparking the Rangers offense who outscored UCCS 20-15 in the period. RU cut the score to 43-40 on an offensive possession that was dominated on the boards. Regis got four looks from downtown, due to consecutive offensive boards, before senior
Mary Sigler drained a three-pointer. Snipes made 1-of-2 free-throws on their next trip to the offensive end to bring the Rangers within two, 43-41.
Espinosa made a layup to send RU into the fourth quarter with a four-point disadvantage. Regis was able to get within one on three separate occasions in the last five minutes, but UCCS always answered, not allowing the Rangers to take the lead. RU was trailing 59-53 before Church made a layup assisted by freshman
Emma Sterkel with 52 seconds left in the game. Church followed her layup with a long-range shot to cut the leaf to 59-58. She made a free-throw to send the game to overtime.
Sigler made the first five-points for RU in overtime, giving them a 64-61 edge. Regis never stretched their lead beyond four and went 4-for-4 from the charity strip to close the game 73-69.
Game Notes: The Rangers had four players contribute double-digit points. Church led all scorers with 18 points (5-15 FG, 3-7 3-PT). She made six of her eight free throw attempts. Snipes scored a career-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 3-of-6 from the foul line. Sigler was able to knock down 12 points and Espinosa added 10. RU shot 39.1 percent from the field (27-69) and 26.3 percent (5-19) from downtown.
Regis didn't allow a UCCS player to score double-digits. Freshman
Whitney Jacob owned the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds, 11 of them coming on the defensive end. Snipes also had a career-night on the boards with eight offensive rebounds and 11 total. Espinosa grabbed 10 boards. The Rangers out-rebounded UCCS 53-33.
Espinosa also recorded three steals and a block.
