Softball sweeps Adams State in Saturday doubleheader

DENVER, Colo- The Regis University softball team (3-7) got back on track with two huge wins over the Adams State University Grizzlies (3-10) on Saturday, beating the visitors 10-0 in game one and 5-2 in game two.

How It Happened: Game One – Regis demolished the Grizzlies 10-0 in five innings during game one of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Senior Emily John (2-2, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) launched a two-run shot to right-field in the bottom of the first inning which set the tone early for the Rangers.

After scoring two more runs in the bottom of the second, sophomore Analece Apodaca (1-3, HR, 3 RBI) stepped up to the plate and smashed a three-run bomb to put the home team ahead 7-0 early on. Regis scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to set up a possible mercy-rule after the fifth inning. Senior Logan Losh (W, 2-3) shut ASU down in the final innings and the Rangers capped off their 10-0 victory over the Grizzlies.

Game Notes: Three players for RU recorded two hits in the game including John, and seniors Delaney McGinn (2-3, RBI, R) and Melissa Heronema (2-3, R, 2 SB). Losh was dominant from the first pitch to her last, allowing only four hits in the game, and earning her first five-inning shutout of the season

How It Happened: Game Two – The second game of the Saturday doubleheader did not have as much firepower as the first game, but Regis still came away with a three-run win, 5-2.

Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Emily John (1-2, HR, 2 RBI) came up big again, crushing a ball over the fence for a two-run blast that tied the game at two runs apiece.

Senior Lauren Hernandez (1-1, HR, 2 RBI, BB) followed suit a couple batters later, pelting her first homer of the season, a two-run shot, out of the park to five the Rangers a 4-2 lead. Senior Breana Pearsall came around to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-2 lead, and sophomore Taylor Armitage (W, 1-4) closed out the game earning her first complete game win of the season.

Up Next for the Rangers: The softball team will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. against the Adams State University Grizzlies.
