Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball takes down Westminster for ninth-straight win

DENVER, Colo. – Make it nine-straight wins for the Regis University men's basketball team (21-5, 15-5 RMAC) as they take down the Westminster College Griffins (20-4, 16-4 RMAC), the second-ranked team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), 81-72 on Saturday night. The team surpasses their win total from a season ago with two games remaining in the regular season.

How It Happened: Regis, who recently clinched a spot in the RMAC Tournament, came out of the gates ready to roll. It was evident that the game plan was to lock down on defense as much as possible, and they executed almost flawlessly in the opening half, leading to a 31-25 advantage at the break.

The Rangers led by as many as 14 points, 53-39, in the second half when junior Avonte Nelms knocked down one of his four three-point baskets of the game. The leading scorer in the conference, Dayon Goodman of WC, went off for 36 points and 14 rebounds but RU did not let many other players open up offensively.

The Griffins got within a couple points here and there down the stretch, but Regis led for the entire game, converting on a high percentage of their free throws in crunch time, putting the game away 81-72 in the end.

Game Notes: Nelms (7-11 FG, 4-6 3-pt, 3 AST, 2 STL) continues his unbelievable stretch of shooting, setting another season-high with 19 points. Sophomore Christian Little (6-11 FG, 6-6 FT, 3 REB, 3 AST) also posted 19 points while junior Jarrett Brodbeck (5-15 FG, 4-10 3-pt, 4 REB) scored 16. The Rangers led for the entire game, handing WC only their fourth loss of the season. RU (44.6 percent) edged the Griffins (44.4) in field goal percentage by the narrowest of margins, but they hit on 12-of-25 attempts from beyond the arc, propelling them to the nine-point win.

Up Next for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will close out the regular season with two home games against the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers and the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets next Friday and Saturday.
