DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team (11-14, 13-7 RMAC) fell 63-55 on Saturday afternoon to a tough Westminster College (14-10, 13-7 RMAC) team.
How It Happened: Regis took their first lead of the contest (5-4) on a three-pointer by junior
Majestie Robinson at the 2:10 mark. Robinson added another made basket from downtown to give the Rangers a 10-6 advantage half way through the first quarter. RU was unable to add any more points until junior
Shelby Espinosa knocked-down back-to-back free-throws to give Regis a 12-10 lead with 1:51 to play. The score stayed the same throughout the quarter.
Westminster outscored the Rangers 18-11 in the second quarter. The Griffins went on a 9-0 run over a three-minute span to gain a 19-14 edge. Espinosa put a stop to the run with a layup assisted by Senior
Mary Sigler. Westminster lead by as many as seven (25-18) with 2:41 left in the half. Both teams drained a long-range shot with under one minute to play to send the game into the half with a 28-23 score-line in favor of the Griffins.
RU regained the advantage with an 8-0 run sparked by a Robinson layup and capped with a layup by freshman
Whitney Jacob. Senior
Mary Sigler swished a three and Jacob followed with a layup to give Regis their largest lead of the game, 38-32, with 5:43 left in the third.
The Griffins went on two 5-0 runs, with a Sigler layup between, to close the quarter. Westminster was able to add a layup two seconds before the buzzer sounded to take a 48-42 lead going into the fourth.
Regis held the Griffins scoreless for the first 3:32 of the final quarter. Back-to-back layups by Robinson and Jacob cut the Rangers deficit to one, 48-47. The Griffins answered with a 5-0 run to again stretch their lead to six. A Sigler layup knotted the game at 55 with 2:14 left on the clock, but RU wasn't able to add any more points. Westminster ended the game with eight-straight points to win 63-55.
Game Notes: Robinson led the game with 21-points (8-12 FG, 4-5 3-PT). Jacob added 12 on 6-of-11 from the field and 0-1 from three-point range. Sigler was the last Regis player in double-digits with 11 (5-14 FG, 1-5 3-PT).
The Rangers out-rebounded the Griffins 39-28. Espinosa led the push with a game-high 12 boards (four offensive and eight defensive). Sigler and Jacob each added eight total.
The rebounds led to 21 second-chance points for RU and just seven for the Griffins. Regis turned the ball over 16 times leading to 19-points going the other way. They created eight turnovers leading to just five points.
Up Next for the Rangers: The women's basketball team will play host South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (16-10, 11-9 RMAC) on February 23 at 5 p.m. Regis defeated the Lady 'Rockers 77-75 earlier in the season.
