DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team (15-11, 14-7 RMAC) pulled away from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (16-11, 11-10 RMAC) during the second half of Friday's game to secure a 62-49 win.
How It Happened: Regis started the game with five layups by five different players to take a 10-4 advantage. The Rangers defense help Hardrockers to just eight first quarter points while scoring 19 of their own. RU led by as many as 13 (19-6) with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Hardrockers opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to close the gap to two (19-17). Back-to-back free-throws by freshman
Whitney Jacob ended the run three minutes into the quarter. South Dakota Mines took their first lead of the game with 51 seconds to play in the first half, but Regis responded on the next possession with a layup by junior
Shelby Espinosa to take a 30-31 edge heading into halftime.
The score remained the same through the first 1:39 of the second half until Jacob knocked-down a three-pointer assisted by senior
Mary Sigler. Jacob's points were the first three of the Rangers 18 third quarter points. RU scored ten points and held the Hardrockers scoreless throughout the final three minutes of the quarter. Junior
Majestie Robinson made a layup as time expired to give Regis a 49-37 lead.
South Dakota Mines never got closer than seven as Regis outscored them 13-12 in the final quarter. Senior
Mary Sigler nailed a long-range shot for the final Rangers' basket of the game with 1:57 to play. They ended the game making six of eight free-throw attempts to close out the Hardrockers 62-49.
Game Notes: Jacob led all scorers with 13 total points (5-9 FG, 1-1 3-PT). Espinosa was the only other RU player to score double-digits. She had 12 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field. All five other scorers for Regis had 6-plus points. The Rangers shot 46.9 percent from the field as a team and 28.6 percent from three-point land.
RU out-rebounded the Hardrockers 33 to 28. Espinosa had a game-high 13 rebounds with nine of them coming off the defensive glass.
Regis forced 13 turnovers and turned them into 14 points. They gave up just three points off their 12 turnovers.
