DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (23-5, 17-5 RMAC) picked up yet another win on Saturday night, extending their winning streak to 11-straight. Regis dismantled the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (15-11, 12-10 RMAC) 83-71.
How It Happened: In a rematch from early December, the Rangers were looking to avenge one of only five losses they surrendered this season, one that came at the hands of BHSU in Spearfish, SD. RU had the lead for the entire game and at one point held a 22 point advantage.
At halftime, freshman
Brian Dawson (9), sophomore
Christian Little (8), and junior
Ryan Beisty (8) combined for 25 of the teams 41 points. The Rangers had a 15-point cushion after shooting the ball at a staggering 61.5 percent clip from the field.
Their hot shooting carried over to the second half as they knocked in 5-of-9 shots from deep. Junior
Avonte Nelms went 2-for-2 from long range in the second half while Dawson and senior
Dexter Sienko each made their only attempt from beyond the arc.
With 2:15 left in the game, senior
Roberto Reyes made a driving layup that put RU in front 83-61. The Yellow Jackets scored the final 10 points of the game, but it was never going to be enough to surmount the 22-point lead RU had constructed, and the home team dribbled out the clock for their 11
th-straight win, 83-71.
Game Notes: Little (8-12 FG, 4-5 FT, 4 REB, 2 AST) had a game-high 20 points, which is his fifth 20-point outing of the season. Sienko (6-8 FG, 1-1 3-pt, 2-2 FT, 6 STL, 4 REB, 4 AST, 2 BLK) had fantastic night, filling the stat sheet in a variety of ways that included 15 points and a career-high six steals. Junior
Jarrett Brodbeck (5-13 FG, 3-8 3-pt, 3 REB) finished the night with 13 points and a season-best five assists. Dawson (12 pts, 4-6 FG) and Beisty (10 pts, 4-6 FG, 7 REB) were the other two players that scored double-figures for the Blue and Gold. Regis shot .593 (32-54) from the floor and 11-for-21 from distance, which were both season-highs.
With their 23rd win of the season, the Rangers have the most wins in a single-season since the 1995-96 season, when that team finished 25-5. Additionally, their 16th conference win is a program best, surpassing the 1977-78 and 1978-79 teams that won 15 conference games apiece.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will wait to see who they will match up with in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament. The Rangers will be hosting their first-round matchup on Tuesday, February 27 at 7 p.m. in the Regis Fieldhouse as the No. 2 seed.
