Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 12 RU overpowers UVA-Wise 21-12 as Vanek nets career-high eight goals

DENVER, Colo. – Even though the snow forced the women's lacrosse team to move their home-opener to Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Regis (2-1) unleashed for 21 goals in a nine-goal win over the University of Virginia's College at Wise (2-1) on Monday afternoon.

How It Happened: The first half was really no contest as the Rangers exploited the Cavalier defense for 13 goals, while the RU defense held their opposition to only three shots, and two goals in the opening period.

The second half was closer than it should have been for Regis as they allowed four times as many shots (12) than they did in the first half. Consequently, UVA-Wise was able to score 10 goals, which amounted to five times as many as they had in the first half. The Rangers managed to score eight goals of their own, and they were never really in danger of surrendering the lead.

Game Notes: Sophomore Ali Vanek, who has been having a fantastic season, led the way with a career-high eight goals. She also recorded an assist, setting a new career-high with nine points. Freshman Kyleigh People had a season-high six points, scoring two goals and recording four assists. She also scooped up five ground balls to lead the team. Junior Jada Bonner netted three goals, had two assists, five points, and caused a game-high six turnover and tracked down four ground balls. Eight RU players had at least two ground balls including Peoples (5), Bonner (4), freshman Sarah Kate Dhom (3), sophomore Katie Schilmoeller (2), Vanek (2), and seniors Rachel Walker (2), Hailey Nyquist (2), and Katie Coleman (2).

Freshman Elle Crawford (W, 1-1) earned her first career win as she played the entire first half, making one save and allowing only two goals. Sophomore Court Huston (4 GA) shared time with senior Kenley Harrington (6 GA, 1 S) between the pipes in the second half. Regis held advantages in many categories including shots (40-15), ground balls (25-15), draw controls (23-12) and turnovers (19-23).

Up Next for the Rangers: The women's lacrosse team will hope that they will be able to have their true home opener this Saturday, March 3 when the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks come to town. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
