Softball drops two on day two of St. Mary's Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Regis University softball team (1-6) dropped both games on the second day of the St. Mary's Tournament losing to Eastern New Mexico University, 5-4, and Texas Woman's University, 8-2.
 
How It Happened | Game One: Eastern New Mexico got out to an early 2-0 lead after the top half of the first inning, but Regis countered with a strong bottom half offensively. Sophomore Jaiden Johnson smashed a solo shot to center field as the leadoff hitter. With two runners on base, freshman Tori Brown laced a single through the left side, scoring senior Melissa Heronema on the play to tie the game at two runs apiece.
 
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, junior Michelle Larose singled up the middle, allowing Brown to cross the plate for a 3-2 Rangers lead. RU extended their lead to 4-2 in the second inning when sophomore Analece Apodaca doubled down the left field line, bringing Johnson around to score from second base.
 
ENMU got back in the game with a solo shot in the top of the third inning, cutting the Rangers' lead to one run, 4-3. With a runner on base, the Greyhounds put a ball in play but a throwing error from the shortstop allowed the runner to cross the plate and tie the game at four runs apiece. ENMU capitalized on another RU error, scoring another run to take a 5-4 lead after the visitor's half of the third. Regis could not find an answer in the final four innings and the game concluded with the Greyhounds ahead 5-4. 
 
Game Notes | Game One: Apodaca went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double and an RBI to lead the Rangers in game one. Johnson (1-4, HR, RBI) crushed her first homerun of the season and both Brown and Larose went 1-for-3 on the day, recording one RBI each. Freshman Allisha Martinez (1-3) was the only other RU player to record a hit. As a team, Regis left six runners on base and committed two errors. Sophomore Taylor Armitage (L, 0-3) picked up the loss despite throwing seven innings, striking out six batters and allowing only three earned runs.
 
How It Happened | Game Two: With two outs in the top of the second senior Delaney McGinn doubled to left field. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead over Texas Woman's University when freshman Brianna Benoit hit an RBI single to left field to score McGinn.
 
In the bottom of the third, TWU got a runner on base after an infield error by RU. The next batter for the Pioneers singled and proceeded to steal second base, placing two runners in scoring position. They both came around to score on a 2-RBI single to right field.  
 
RU was able to get base-runners on the corners while trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth. An error by the Pioneers short stop allowed sophomore Laura Scheffel to reach base and McGinn was able to cross home plate to tie the game at two.
 
The Rangers relinquished six unanswered runs, two in the bottom of the fourth and four in the sixth. The RU batters went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and the game ended 8-2 in favor of TWU.
 
Game Notes | Game Two: Apodaca lead Regis with two hits on three at bats. McGinn (1-3) scored both runs for the Rangers. Benoit, Brown and freshman Erica Mann each recorded one hit. RU compiled six total hits and left nine runners stranded. Both teams committed two errors on the afternoon. The Regis pitching staff allowed 11 total hits. Senior Logan Losh (1-3) was given the loss after pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and six earned runs. She retired three batters on strikes.
 
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University softball team will play a neutral site game against Cameron University for their third game in the St. Mary's Tournament in the in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, February 10 at 11:15 a.m.
