CHADRON, Neb.
– The Regis University Softball team split a doubleheader Monday afternoon against Chadron State College, picking up a run-rule win in the first game and dropping a one-run affair in the conclusion of the series.
Regis took the series 3-1, improving to 15-9 overall and 10-2 in RMAC play.
How It Happened | Game 1: The offense backed another strong start by
Logan Losh and the Rangers went on to win 9-1 in six innings.
RU trailed early but was able to push across a run to tie the game in the top of the second inning. The Rangers would go on to score five runs in the fourth and three in sixth to enforce the run-rule.
Emily John led of the fourth inning with her fifth home run of the year. Regis scored three additional runs on
Melissa Heronema's bases-loaded single and subsequent errors by the Eagles' defense. Heronema would score on
Lauren Hernandez's bunt to give the Rangers a 6-1 lead.
RU's three runs in the sixth inning all came with two outs.
Tori Brown knocked in a pair on a double down the left field line and scored on Ana Apodaca's single up the middle to put Regis ahead by eight.
Logan Losh held CSC scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up the victory for the Rangers. The win was the second of the weekend for Losh, who fanned five and allowed just three hits.
Game Notes: Heronema and John each had three RBI afternoons for RU. Johnson scored three runs in addition to her two hits. Losh notched her eighth win of the season and has a team-leading ERA of 2.86.
How It Happened | Game 2: Despite an early lead, Regis' six-game winning streak came to an end as CSC battled back to take the final game of the series, 7-6.
The Rangers scored twice in the second inning but allowed the Eagles to score six unanswered to take a 6-2 lead midway through the game.
Regis chipped into the lead in the sixth, as
Allisha Martinez drove in a run and Johnson slugged a two-run home run to center. CSC responded in the bottom half with a critical insurance run.
Brown led off the seventh with her second home run of the year and Apodaca follow up with a single. The Rangers moved the runner to second but could not capitalize, giving the Eagles a one-run victory.
Taylor Armitage pitched all six innings for RU and allowed five earned runs.
Game Notes: Johnson and Apodaca each had multiple hits in the losing effort. Regis has won 14 of their last 16 games and they currently sitsthird in the RMAC standings after three weeks of conference play.
Next Up For The Rangers: The softball team will return home to take on Fort Lewis College in a four-game series starting with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday. Games will be streamed live at RegisRangers.com.
