DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (14-7, 6-3 RMAC) downed Colorado Christian University (6-9, 1-4 RMAC) 17-6 on Friday afternoon.
How it Happened: The wind helped push four hits over the outfield wall, one for CCU and three for Regis. Colorado Christian took a 1-0 lead with a solo shot, but the Rangers responded in the bottom of the first with three homeruns of their own.
Sophomore
Coby Zimmerman was hit by a pitch to open the inning and freshman
Marcus Salvato followed with a single through the right side. Senior
Andrew Bryniarski was the next batter up and he lifted the first homerun over the left field wall, giving RU a 3-1 lead.
Senior
Garrett Skillings sent a solo shot over the wall to stretch the lead to 4-1. Sophomore
Ryan Tierney is accountable for the last four runs of the first as he hit a one-out grand-slam.
The Cougars cut their deficit in half with three runs in the top of the second, but Regis had an answer. Junior
Connor Rochon scored the only Rangers run in the bottom of the second when a ball passed CCU's catcher.
RU didn't add another run until the sixth inning. They were able to score seven runs on seven hits. Rochon hit a two-RBI single to center-field scoring Salvato and Bryniarski. Rochon advanced to third after stealing second and came around to score on a double down the left-field line by senior
Chris Kobar.
With the bases loaded, Zimmerman also doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases and making the score 16-5.
Each team added another run before the game concluded, but Regis held onto a 17-6 win.
Game Notes: Four Rangers had three hits on the day, including Bryniarski (3-5, 3 RBI, 1 HR, 1 2B), Kobar (3-5, 2 RBI, 1 2B), Rochon (3-4, 3 RBI, 1 2B) and Salvato (3-4). RU collected 18 total hits compared to the Cougars 13.
Each team committed a single error.
Senior
Brad Thoutt (5-1) earned the win after pitching five complete innings and giving up five runs on eight hits. He struck out four of the 22 batters he faced.
