DENVER – The Regis University softball team split a doubleheader against Fort Lewis College on Sunday. The Rangers picked up a 15-5 win in game one before dropping the series finale, 3-1.
Regis moves to 18-10 overall and 13-3 in RMAC after the four-game series with Fort Lewis.
How It Happened | Game 1: Ana Apodaca and Lauren Hernandez combined for nine RBI and three home runs to guide the Rangers to a 15-5 victory over the Skyhawks.
RU wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Apodaca sent a three-run blast to center and Hernandez plated two with her first home run of the game.
Regis also received a two-run double from Jaiden Johnson and an RBI from Melissa Heronema. Apodaca singled for her fourth RBI of the inning to put RU up 9-0 after the first inning.
RU scored two runs in the second inning on a throwing error and RBI double from Delaney McGinn. In the third inning, Hernandez connected on her second homer of the game to drive in three runs.
Laura Scheffel tripled to start the bottom of the fourth inning and scored on Tori Brown's single.
Fort Lewis scored three unearned runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth.
Logan Losh allowed three unearned runs for RU and struck out six batters. She picked up her 10th win of the season. Rachel Jones pitched the final inning for RU.
Game Notes: The Rangers knocked out 16 hits with Johnson, Apodaca and Hernandez leading the way with three hits each. Hernandez recorded her first multiple home run game of the season. Regis scored five runs at the start of the game, prior to committing an out.
How It Happened | Game 2: Regis was unable to carry over its offensive momentum from the first game and dropped the final game of the series, 3-1.
Both teams scored one run in the third, with Johnson scoring on a Apodaca sacrifice fly for the Rangers.
Fort Lewis scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to take the 3-1 lead. The Skyhawks' runs came without a hit as they scored on a hit by pitch and walk with the bases loaded.
Regis benefitted from two FLC miscues in the seventh, but couldn't capitalize with runners at first and second and no outs.
Losh was credited with the loss for RU in a relief appearance. She allowed only one hit, but was in the circle when the Skyhawks took the lead. Starter Taylor Armitage pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs.
Game Notes: Despite the doubleheader split, the Rangers earned a 3-1 series win. The Rangers are in third place in the RMAC after four conference series. All of the RU hits were singles.
