COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University Baseball team (8-5, 0-1 RMAC) dropped their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game 16-9 to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (7-6, 1-0 RMAC).
How It Happened: Regis got on the board first with two quick runs in the first inning. Sophomore
Coby Zimmerman and senior
Chris Kobar led-off the game with back-to-back singles, placing them on the corners of the diamond. Senior
Andrew Bryniarski grounded out to the third baseman but advanced both runners on the play and scoring Zimmerman, giving the Rangers a 1-0 led. Kobar scored the second run of the inning on an RBI single by senior
Zach Dedin.
The RU defense was able to get out of the bottom of the first without giving up their lead, but UCCS cut the score to 2-1 on two hits.
Junior
Logan Heflebower and Zimmerman both doubled down the line in the second inning. Zimmerman's double sent Heflebower across home-plate, making the score 3-1.
The bottom of the third inning was crushing for Regis. UCCS was able to get a lead-off solo homerun to begin the inning. With two outs, the Mountain Lions added five more runs on four hits and took control of the game 7-3. The score was stretched to 9-3 before the Rangers scored another run.
RU was able to get one run in the fifth and sixth inning, but they surrendered four runs in the bottom of the fifth. UCCS had a commanding 16-5 lead at the end of the eighth.
In their last effort, Regis was able to get four runs on just two hits in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the game ended with a score of 16-9 in the Mountain Lions favor.
Game Notes: Zimmerman (3-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B) and freshman
Marcus Salvato (3-4, 2 RBI, 1 3B) led the Rangers bats with three hits apiece. Kobar, Heflebower, Dedin and junior
Connor Rochon all recorded two hits. The Rangers were able to connect for 18 hits, but they left nine of them stranded on base.
Senior
Brad Thoutt (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season after pitching three innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits. He struck out two batters.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis baseball team will face UCCS again tomorrow, March 3 in a double-header set to begin at 11 a.m.
