Thoutt deals seven scoreless innings as Regis downs MSU 5-0

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (19-11, 11-6 RMAC) recorded their fourth shutout of the season with a 5-0 win over Metropolitan State University of Denver (14-16, 10-7 RMAC) on Thursday night.

How It Happened: Senior Andrew Bryniarski was the first Regis runner to reach base after being hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning. The next two batters, seniors Garrett Skillings and Chris Kobar, made it safely to first base with a single through the left side and reaching on a fielders' choice, respectively. Skillings was retired before he made it to second base and Kobar beat the double-play attempt at first base.

With runners on the corners and just one out, senior Zach Dedin grounded out to first base but allowed Bryniarski to score, putting the Rangers up 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, MSU had the tying and go-ahead run on second and third base with just one out, but senior Brad Thoutt was able to pitch his way out of the jam. He recorded the second out of the inning with an 0-3 strikeout and forced a fly-out to retire the side.

Skillings launched a two-out solo-homerun to right-field in the top of the fourth to give RU a 2-0 advantage. Kobar followed the homerun with a single through the left side and advanced to second on his first stolen base of the season. Dedin hit an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Kobar and stretching the Regis lead to 3-0.

Thoutt walked two consecutive batters in the bottom of the fourth but got out of the inning before suffering any damage. His defense turned a 5-4-3 double-play to head into the fifth.

Junior Connor Rochon led-off the top of the eighth inning with a double to left-center and advanced to third on a wild-pitch. He came around to score the Rangers fourth run of the ballgame on a single to right-center by Kobar.

Junior Logan Hefebower was able to add an insurance run for RU in the ninth inning. He reached base with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a balk. He crossed home-plate when the Roadrunners pitcher threw a wild-pitch. His run secured a 5-0 win for Regis.

Game Notes: Kobar led the team with three hits (3-4, 1 RBI) while Skillings (2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and Dedin (2-4, I RBI) each collected two. The Rangers out-hit MSU 10-4.
