DENVER – The Regis University softball team split its final two games of the weekend against Metro State, jumping back in the win column before losing the series finale.
The Rangers took advantage of Roadrunner miscues in a 7-1 victory before falling 6-0 in the conclusion. Regis stands at 23-13 overall and 18-6 in RMAC play.
How It Happened | Game 1: Alisha Martinez and Ana Apodaca provided key hits for the Rangers who bounced back to defeat the Roadrunners, 7-1, in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Martinez and Apodaca accounted for all five of the runs scored in the third inning for RU. Apodaca singled home two runs to start the scoring for the Rangers. Martinez followed up by lacing a double to right center that cleared the bases for Regis.
The runs were more than enough for RU starter Logan Losh who picked up her 13th win of the season. She tossed a complete game, allowed one earned run, and struck out six batters in the win.
Regis added two late runs on Melissa Heronema's double in the fifth inning and Tori Brown's homer to lead off the seventh inning.
Game Notes: Apodaca and Delaney McGinn had two hits for the Rangers. All of RU's runs in the third inning came after two errors by the Roadrunners. Delaney McGinn scored twice to go along with one walk. Apodaca's two RBIs tied her for a team-high with seven multiple RBI games.
How It Happened | Game 2: Hoping to take advantage of the earlier win, Regis was unable to find its offense as it collected only two hits against MSU-Denver.
The Rangers went in order in the first three innings as the Roadrunners built a five-run cushion, including three-runs in the first inning. Metro State would add runs in the second, third and fifth as they picked up the series victory.
Brown provided the first hit for RU with two outs in the fourth inning and Heronema singled to lead off the seventh inning. Regis had only four baserunners in the contest.
Starter Taylor Armitage (9-8) had a rough day in the circle for RU, surrendering 13 hits and allowing five earned runs.
Game Notes: Brown led the Rangers throughout the four-game series, with hits in each of the games to extend her hitting streak to eight games. RU hit into two double plays that eliminated two scoring opportunities.
Next Up For The Rangers: Regis returns home next weekend to face nearby rival Colorado Christian University in two doubleheaders. First pitches are scheduled for noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
