COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (9-7, 1-3 RMAC) dropped the final game of the series against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (9-7, 3-1 RMAC) 6-5 on Sunday.
How It Happened: UCCS got on the scoreboard first, scoring one run on three hits in the bottom half of the first inning.
In the third inning, sophomore
Coby Zimmerman was given first base after being hit by a pitch. The next batter up, senior
Chris Kobar, hit a homerun to give Regis a 2-1 advantage. The Mountainlions homered to tie the game in the bottom of the third and added three runs on four hits to take a 5-2 lead in the fourth.
The score remained 5-2 until Zimmerman hit a solo homerun in the seventh inning to bring the score to 5-3. UCCS went back up by three after getting three singles and a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore
Ryan Tierney smashed a two-out solo homerun in the eighth to cut the Rangers deficit to 6-4.
Freshman
Marcus Salvato reached on a single to center-field to lead-off the ninth. He came around to score, making it a one-run game (6-5), on an RBI-double to left-center by Zimmerman. Senior
Andrew Bryniarski reached base safely on an error by the Mountainlions second-baseman. The runners advanced to second and third on a fielders' choice.
With two-outs and the game on the line, senior
Garrett Skillings grounded out to the shortstop and UCCS claimed a 6-5 victory.
Game Notes: Zimmerman (2-4, 2 RBI), Tierney (2-4, 1 RBI) and Salvato (2-4) were the only Regis players with multiple hits. The Rangers combined for eight hits and gave up 16.
Sophomore Kobe Karhoff (1-1) was given the loss after pitching the first four innings and giving up five runs on 11 hits while striking out four batters.
