DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (12-8, 7-1 RMAC) stole two games from the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (10-10, 4-4 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened | Game One: Regis got the bats going in the late innings of game one to beat the visiting Orediggers 10-2 in five-innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the Rangers put up a four-spot with sophomore
Analece Apodaca collecting two RBI's on a single to center field. Two batters later, senior
Lauren Hernandez doubled to left center, scoring two, to put RU ahead 4-1 after three full innings.
The home squad did even more damage in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits. Senior
Melissa Heronema recorded three RBI's on a double to center field, Apodaca singled to right which brought Heronema in to score the fourth run of the inning. Senior
Emily John hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing pinch-runner
Michelle Larose to score from third base.
Regis held a 9-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth, looking to end the game early with one more run. Senior
Delaney McGinn led off the inning with a walk and two groundouts advanced her all the way to third base. Sophomore
Jaiden Johnson reached on an error in the infield which scored McGinn from third, ending the game with an eight-run mercy rule.
Game Notes: Heronema (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 SB) and Apodaca (2-3, 3 RBI) each had two hits and 3 runs batted in during game one to lead the Rangers. Senior
Logan Losh (W, 6-4) picked up her sixth win of the season, scattering five hits and striking out five. Losh did not allow a single earned run, as the two runs that scored came as a result of four RU errors.
How It Happened | Game Two: Regis exploded for five runs in the opening inning, sparked by a lead-off homerun by Johnson. John was accountable for the second run, hitting an RBI-double to center-field and scoring freshman
Tori Brown. Senior
Lauren Hernandez followed with an RBI-double of her own, making the score 3-0. McGinn sent Hernandez and herself across home-plate on a two-run homerun to centerfield.
The bats remained strong through the second inning as the Rangers stretched their lead to 9-0. John hit a three-RBI homerun over center-field to cap off the 9-0 run by RU.
Mines was able to get two runs on three hits in the top of the third, making the score 9-2. Regis responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Johnson doubled down the left-field line with two outs and came around to score on a single by Heronema. Heronema scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Rangers closed the game in the fifth inning, retiring the Mines' batters 1-2-3 to secure an 11- victory.
Game Notes: Johnson (2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 2B), John (2-3, 4 RBI, 1 HR, 1 2B) and Heroema (2-2, 1 RBI) led the Rangers with two hits apiece. RU combined for eight hits and allowed just four.
Sophomore
Taylor Armitage (5-4) was awarded the win after pitching a complete game and only giving up two runs on four hits. She struck-out one batter.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University softball team will head to Chadron, Nebraska next weekend to take on the Chadron State College Eagles in a four-game conference series. Games will be played at 12 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
