SPARKS, MD. – The No. 12 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (3-2) battled against the No. 4 Le Moyne College Dolphins (3-0) on Thursday afternoon, but they came up on the wrong end of a 17-11 outcome. The game was played at William G. Tierney Field which is at the US Lacrosse Headquarters near Baltimore.
How It Happened: It was a tale of two halves on Thursday evening and Regis looked like a team ready to blowout the No. 4 Dolphins.
After Le Moyne scored the first two goals of the game, the Rangers countered with three unanswered goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead. RU expanded their lead to 6-3, but the Dolphins tied the game 6-6 with two minutes to go in the first half.
Regis scored the last goal of the half when freshman
Kyleigh Peoples took a pass from sophomore
Ali Vanek and slotted it past the goalkeeper to give the Rangers a 7-6 lead at halftime.
The second half was a completely different story for RU as they allowed Le Moyne to take the lead back 8-7 four minutes into the second half.
Senior
Rachael Walker tied the game at eight goals apiece, but their next goal would not come until the 9:46 mark when sophomore
Ali Vanek scored her second goal of the game. Prior to that time, the Dolphins had built a 14-9 lead and Vanek's goal cut the lead to four goals.
Le Moyne scored three unanswered goals near the end of the game, and senior
Jada Bonner earned a free-position attempt with five second on the clock. Bonner scored on her opportunity, but the horn sounded, and No. 12 Regis fell to the No. 4 ranked Dolphins 17-11.
Game Notes: Peoples (3 G, 5 SH, 3 DC, 1-1 FPS) and Vanek (2 G, 1 A, 3 GB, 1 CT, 1-1 FPS) led the way with three points apiece. Freshman
Elle Crawford (L, 2-2) was an animal in between the posts, making 18 saves in 60 minutes. Crawford also led the team in caused turnovers (3) and ground balls (6). The Rangers were outshot 45-26, but they won the ground ball battle 22-20.
Up Next for the Rangers: The team will return to William G. Tierney Field on Saturday evening to face the No. 22 ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers (1-1) at 3 p.m. (MST).
