Benoit Hits Three Home Runs, Regis Earns Two Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Regis University softball team picked up 8-0 and 12-3 victories to earn a doubleheader sweep over New Mexico Highlands University in the final series of the year.
 
Brianna Benoit became just the third player in program history to record three or more home runs in a game. She was the first player to achieve the feat since 2007. 
 
The wins move the Rangers to 33-17 on the season with a 28-10 RMAC conference record with just two games remaining in the regular season schedule.
 
How It Happened |Game 1:The Rangers received home runs from Ana Apodaca and Jaiden Johnson and a complete-game shutout from Logan Losh to take the series opener.
 
Apodaca put RU on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run. It was the ninth of the season for the sophomore.
 
The game remained 2-0 until the fifth inning when Johnson, the reigning RMAC Player of the Week, launched her 10th long ball of the season.
 
RU would go on to score two more runs in the sixth inning on a triple from Alisha Martinez and a throwing error on an attempted stolen base that plated a runner from third base.
 
Apodaca recorded her first triple of the season in the seventh inning that put Regis up 8-0.
 
Losh, coming off her fourth RMAC Pitcher of the Week honor, scattered seven hits and struck out five in her 18thvictory of the season. Most of those hits came late as Losh retired the first 11 batters she faced. She wiggled out of a bases-loaded situation in the fourth and stranded eight runners.
 
Game Notes: Heronema went 3-for-4 and posted two doubles. Apodaca's two hits and three RBI gave her the 20thmulti-hit and 10thmulti RBI game on the year. Johnson extended her hit streak to seven. Losh's shutout was the eighth on the season for the senior.  
 

How It Happened |Game 2: Brianna Benoit had a career day that included three home runs and seven RBI to lead Regis to the doubleheader sweep over the Cowboys.
 
Benoit hit a grand slam that highlighted a six-run second inning that also included a solo homer for Johnson. The first three runners reach in the inning leading to Benoit's first-career grand slam that put RU up 4-1.
 
After a Delaney McGinn solo shot, Benoit slugged a solo shot that extended the Rangers lead to seven runs. Her third homer of the game was a two-run shot in the fifth that started a four-run inning that allowed the Rangers to run-rule the Cowboys in five innings. 
 
Her three homers were the first since Heather Utecht achieved the feat against Western New Mexico in 2007.
 
Taylor Armitage pitched 4.1 innings for the Rangers and allowed one earned run, five hits, and struck out two. 
 
 
Game Notes: Benoit's had only one home run on the season leading into the game. Johnson went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and McGinn went 3-for-3. Johnson's homer extended her extra-base hit streak to six games. Armitage earned her 14thvictory of the season.
  
Next Up For The Rangers:The two teams resume the series on Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. It will be the final regular season games of the season for the Rangers.
