Baseball allows three runs in ninth inning, fall 10-9 to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (20-17, 12-11 RMAC) dropped a heartbreaker, 10-9, on a walk off RBI-single by the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (18-16, 12-10 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon.
 
How It Happened: Regis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Connor Rochon singled through the left side and Senior Garrett Skillings followed with a two-run homerun to right center. UCCS cut the score in half with one run on three hits the bottom of the first.
 
The Rangers put up another two-run inning in the third, stretching their lead to 4-1. With two outs, Rochon reached base on an error by the second baseman. He scored on a double to right-field by Skillings, who came around to score a run of his own when senior Andrew Bryniarski hit an RBI-double to center-field.
 
The Mountainlions scored the next three runs on two homeruns to tie the game at four. The first homer came in the bottom of the fourth inning on a lead-off solo shot and the second homerun was a two-run shot to right-field in the fifth inning.
 
A Bryniarski solo homerun in the sixth inning sparked a 4-0 RU run to give them an 8-4 edge. After his homerun, sophomore Ryan Tierney, who reached on a walk, scored on a Marcus Salvato RBI-single up the middle.
 
In the seventh inning, Regis scored two more runs on one play. Tierney singled to left-field, scoring senior Zach Dedin and Bryniarski, but got thrown-out as he was trying to advance to second base.
 
The Rangers allowed five hits and three runs in the eighth inning, making the score 8-7 in their favor. RU was able to take a two-run lead in the ninth inning on another Bryniarski homerun, but gave up their lead as they surrendered another three-run inning in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Game Notes: Skillings and Bryniarski each accounted for three hits on five plate appearances. Skillings recorded three RBI's on a double and a homerun. Bryniarski also had three RBI's on a double and two homeruns. Rochon, Dedin, and Tierney all had two hits and Tierney added an RBI.
 
Regis recorded 15 hits but gave up 16.
 
Junior Matt Heibuilt (2-3) got the loss after allowing the game-winning run on two hits. He pitched the last 0.2 innings and struck out a batter.
 
Sophomore Cobe Karhoff got the start and pitched five complete innings. He allowed four runs on six hits while striking out five batters.
 
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will begin their last road series against Colorado Mesa University on April 13 at 6:05 p.m. before returning home on April 20.
