Comeback falls short as Rangers fall 4-3

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 6 seeded Regis University baseball team (27-23, 18-16 RMAC came up shy, 4-3, against No. 3 seeded University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (28-22, 20-16 RMAC)

How It Happened: With three straight singles in the first inning, Regis loaded the bases but left all three runners stranded. They gathered five total hits through four innings but were unable to get a run across as they left all five runners on board.

UCCS took the lead with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. Both runs came with two outs.

Senior Noah Gotsis recorded his first strikeout of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gotsis, who had to work with runners on the base path in the first four innings, kept great command of his pitches, leaving five UCCS runners on base.

The Mountain Lions stretched their lead to 4-0 with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Junior Connor Rochon reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop to lead-off the eighth inning. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Rangers and with two outs junior Logan Heflebower recorded his first hit of the game, clearing the bases and closing the gap to 4-3.

Heflebower was sent home on a hit to left-field by Marcus Salvato but a laser-beam throw from the left-fielder ended with Heflebower being tagged-out at home.

RU was unable to get another run and came up just short 4-3.

Game Notes: Regis collected 10 total hits, nine of which came with two outs. Sophomore Coby Zimmerman (2-5), senior Chris Kobar (2-5), and freshman Marcus Salvato (2-4) were the three Rangers to record multiple hits. Heflebower accounted for all three RBIs on his lone hit.

Gotsis (6-5) was given the loss after pitching seven complete innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. He struck-out two batters.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will play the loser of Colorado Mines and CSU-Pueblo tomorrow, May 11 at 11 a.m. If the Rangers drop the game they will be eliminated from the tournament.
