DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (26-22, 18-16 RMAC) dropped their last two games of the season to the Orediggers of Colorado Mines University (32-14, 25-11 RMAC). Mines took the game 9-4 and 7-6 respectively.
How It Happened | Game 1: Regis out-hit the Orediggers 10-7, but were haunted by giving up 12 free bases via dealing 10 walks and hitting three batters.
Junior
Connor Rochon wasted no time getting the Rangers on the board. He sent the fourth pitch he saw over the right-field fence, giving RU a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning.
Regis held the Orediggers scoreless until the third inning when they scored three runs on one hit and two errors. Their first three batters for Mines were walked, loading the bases with zero outs. The fourth batter singled through the right side allowing two runs to score, giving the Orediggers a 2-1 lead. The third run crossed homeplate on a fielders' choice.
Junior
Mickey Meinhofer led-off the bottom of the third inning with a single to left-field. Freshman
Cody Schultz followed with a successful bunt, placing runners on first and second base with zero outs. A double to right-field by junior
Connor Rochon ended with two RBIs, tying the game at three.
Two straight walks followed by a hit-by-pitch to open the fifth inning, loaded the bases with zero outs for Colorado Mines. They managed to score all three runners on a double to left-field. The Orediggers stretched their led to four, 7-3, with one run in the sixth inning.
The Rangers added one run to their total in the seventh inning but gave up a two-run shot in the eigth inning to make the final score9-4.
Game Notes: Rochon (2-4, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 RBI), Kobar (2-4), and Dedin (2-4, 2 2B) each had multiple hits while four other RU batters added a single hit.
Sophomore Kobe Karhoff (2-5) was given his fifth loss of the season. He allowed five hits on five runs in four complete innings. Karhoff retired two batters on strikes.
How It Happened | Game 2: Colorado Mines scored three first inning runs after three of their batters were walked. They laid down just one hit and their last run came around to score on an error.
Three straight Regis hits ended in a single run in the second inning. Sophomore
Coby Zimmerman hit a one out double down the left-field line. He came around to score on back-to-back singles by sophomore
Ryan Tierney and junior
Logan Heflebower.
In the bottom of the third inning, freshman
Marcus Salvato launched his first career homerun over the right-field wall, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
The score did not stay 3-2 for long as the Orediggers added four runs on three hits and two walks.
The Rangers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within three, 7-4. Both runs that scored were put on the base path without a hit. Rochon reached base on a walk and Dedin was hit by a pitch. Zimmerman sent both runners home on a two-RBI double to right-field.
Game Notes: Regis collected six hits as a team and were lead by Zimmerman (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI). Salvato recorded his first career homerun in the third inning.
Senior
Patrick Kenny (1-2) started the game and pitched three innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
