No. 21 Regis sweeps CCU on Tuesday night

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 21 ranked Regis University volleyball team (6-5, 2-1 RMAC) earned their first sweep of the season, rolling past the Colorado Christian University Cougars (3-9, 1-2 RMAC) in straight-sets on Tuesday evening.

How It Happened: For the first time this season, Regis came out and controlled the entire match without surrendering a single set. The Rangers posted their highest hitting percentage of the night in the first set, pounding away at a .303 clip. The team also combined for two blocks in the set. Trailing 13-12, RU rattled off six-straight points to take an 18-13 lead which was capped off by a huge kill from sophomore Caitlyn Burroway. Regis never surrendered the lead winning the set 25-23 to take a 1-0 set lead.

The second set was another solid performance from the home side. They had a 4-0 run early in the set that featured three kills in a row from Burroway, setting the tone for the rest of the set. After a couple more runs throughout the set, the Rangers had a comfortable 19-12 lead. The second set went to RU 25-18 as the team tallied a .297 hitting percentage.

The third set saw much of the same domination that Regis displayed in the previous two sets. They had plenty on in system plays that opened up a lot of opportunities to swing hard. It was the most consistent the team had played all season. Junior Nikki Kennedy collected a two blocks in the set on her way to five for the night. He biggest one of the night was a solo block that tied the game at 13 apiece in the third and final set. That gave the Rangers the momentum they needed to preserve the sweep, which they did by earning a 25-21 third-set win.

Game Notes: Burroway led all players with 14 kills, adding six digs and two blocks, and hitting .323 on the night. Kennedy and junior Kelsey Green each recorded 10 kills with Kennedy hitting .350 and Green registering a team-high .368 attack percentage. Junior Silvia Basso put together a solid all-around effort with 35 assists, 10 digs and two kills for the team. Senior Kristina Schell led all players with 15 digs defensively, chipping in with four assists as well.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 21 ranked Regis University volleyball team will hit the road for their next two games, visiting the Eagles of Chadron State College on Friday, September 14 for a match at 6 p.m. The following night, the team will return to Denver to matchup with cross-town rival Metropolitan State University – Denver at 5 p.m. on September 15.
