DENVER, Colo. – Senior
Annika Hills scored her first goal of the season in the 68th minute, lifting the Regis University women's soccer team (3-2-2, 2-1 RMAC) to a 1-0 home victory over Dixie State University (4-2, 0-2 RMAC) on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened: The Rangers struggled to find an offensive groove as they were backed on their heels for much of the first half, allowing Dixie State 12-total offensive opportunities.
Sophomore
Julia Coombs kept the Trailblazers off the scoreboard, saving all four of their shots on target.
RU recorded their first shot in the tenth minute of play when junior
Tori Rinsem tested the Dixie State keeper. Regis managed five more shots in the first 45 minutes, totaling six shots and four on target.
Dixie State looked to have a sure goal as they counter-attacked, creating a one-on-one from the half-line. Coombs stepped off her line and charged forward, breaking down the shooting angles for the Trailblazers attacker and secured her clean-sheet with a kick-save.
Just seven minutes later, Hills scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. She trapped a pass from junior
Emily Ramos before turning and having a shot.
Despite the Trailblazers throwing players forward in search of a goal, the Rangers defense stood stout and did not allow Dixie State another shot attempt in the final 20 minutes, securing their 1-0 victory.
Game Notes: Hills scored her only shot attempt to win the game for RU, who tallied 11 total shots and six on goal. Rinsem led Regis with three shots and two on goal. Sophomore
Keegan Storlie was the only other Ranger to record multiple shots, placing 1-of-2 on frame.
With an assist in the match, Ramos now leads the Rock Mountain Athletic Conference with five total assists.
Coombs came away with five saves. Dixie State held the corner-kick advantage 4-2.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University women's soccer team will return to action on Sunday, September 23 at 1:00 p.m., playing host to Westminster College (5-1-0, 2-0-0 RMAC).
